Children play in a sunny field with flowers, hills, and trees. One reads, two dance with joy. Birds fly in the blue sky, creating a serene mood.

The birds and the bees,

Creeping vines and shadowed trees,

They all grow up eventually.

In whispering fields, flowers lift their faces to the sun,

Hearts full of nectar and seeds. A treat for

The birds and the bees.

Deep in the forest,

The squirrels and mice, hide in

Creeping vines and shadowed trees.

The forest and fields wait for children to come and play,

But just like the birds and the bees, and the vines and trees,

They all grow up eventually.

Description:

This poem is written in the Cascade Poetry style. In Cascade Poetry, you write one stanza with any number of lines. Each consecutive stanza then ends with the corresponding line from the first stanza. Ex: the second stanza ends with “the birds and the bees,” which is the first line of the first stanza.… I wrote this poem as a reminder that, while we might wish that childhood can last forever, it doesn’t. We all grow up someday, some of us sooner than others, just like the plants and animals referenced in the poem.
