Cemetery Secrets

By Arya Varma

Ghosts float in a spooky graveyard under a full moon. Bare trees and tombstones create an eerie atmosphere. Dark blues and grays dominate.

I’ll tell you a timeless secret,

Sat under the barren moon,

I’ll sing it to you softly,

In a slow melodic tune.

You’ll promise not to share it,

Keep it under lock and key,

Stown away in a dragon’s den,

Or under the waves of the sea.

I’ll whisper it into your ear,

And I’ll only do it once.

For the magic of a secret’s gone

If you dare tell anyone.

Here’s my little secret:

I am horribly, awfully afraid,

But no one’s gonna hear it

If I whisper it to your grave.

Description:

Enveloping all the child-like magic of fantasy, the poem deals with our perception of mystery. The things that we don’t know excite us, shock us, even terrify us - and what can be more obscure than a secret? The possibility of the unknown invokes that sense of wonder in us all. That which is kept secret weighs heavily on the minds of those that bear it, and oftentimes that same wonder is turned to death-like fear by the gravity of the truth. A secret is the greatest burden to carry.
