She asks me if I didn’t know her name,

What would I call her?

I look at her face

It’s changed since I fell for her in summer

Her leaves are wilting and her branching arms don’t feel as firm

Her clouds are striking colors of grey and her skin has empty ridges like broken roads

Her days are getting shorter and her eyes, in absence of the sun, are colored like burnt cinnamon

What would I call her?

I look at her face

It’s changed since I fell for her in summer

Even in her decay, she reflects the beauty of nature

Rising and falling,

Youthfully vibrant yet still gracefully aged

I call her Autumn

Description

This poem is inspired by an earlier poem I wrote titled “Summer Love” which is about falling in love with your life in summer while the days are long and the sun is out. “Autumn” is about appreciating the process of aging: grey hairs, wrinkled skin, resting body, and faded eyes as it is just as beautiful as youth. There is no “prime” age- human growth and aging is a process that starts and ends with grace and beauty much like trees all throughout their life even in Autumn when they die.
