I sang to the moon and she sang right back,

And we played a piano duet,

We danced on a floor of great glassy blue,

And got caught in a cloud woven net.

She inched away in a dress and a veil,

Her icy breath kissing my skin,

I held out my hand with a ring in my palm,

And she started to leap and spin.

We waltzed across the star-spangled sky,

Two ghosts that silently sway,

“I’ll give you this dance tonight,” she says,

“And I’ll be gone by the next day.”

A silvery glow wove through her hair,

The wind whistled a song,

I closed my eyes and she danced away;

When I opened them, she was gone.

Description:

The poem captures a whimsical feeling; the speaker, in almost a dreamlike state, dances with the moon, going through all the motions of classic romance. It’s a dramatic experience, and the pair make their way across the sky as the night progresses. However, the moon can’t stay for long, as sunrise is inevitable. The night ends as the moon dances away; all the speaker is left with is the feeling.
